Bucknell Men’s Crew started its season last Saturday at the inaugural Roundabout Regatta, a 6.5 kilometer race around Packer’s Island on the Susquehanna River. Athletes doubled up into several different events, racing the varsity pairs, varsity fours, varsity eights, freshmen eights, and freshmen fours. The Bison would post victories in the varsity pairs, freshmen eights, and freshmen fours.
The varsity pairs were a Bucknell only affair, with 6 Bison crews being the only entries. Bucknell B, rowed by David Dayya ’20 and Duncan Ragland ’19, won the day, beating out Bucknell A (Nick Barpoulis ’17, Alex Herman ’20) by just over 30 seconds. Bucknell F (Billy Pinamont ’17, Sam Jubb’17) would finish third, with Bucknell D (Mike Pallotta ’18, Dillon LaFata ’18), Bucknell E (Mike Birosak ’18, Nick Huang ’19), and C (Drew Stonnington ’19, Thomas Marth ’19) rounding out the group.
The varsity fours saw stronger competition, with crews from Binghamton and LaSalle entered. Bucknell’s A four would finish in third place, 13 seconds off of LaSalle’s top crew. The B boat would finish in 4th place, 11 seconds behind Bucknell A. The A boat was rowed by Gunnar Vorwerk ‘19, Ryan McSherry ‘19, Mike Savage ‘19, Ryan Wang ‘19, and was coxed by Nicole Finan ’17. The B boat was rowed by Gary Tse ‘19, Lucas Colagrossi ‘17, Chris Bowdler ‘19, Dabreon Darby ‘19, and was coxed by Emilee Bae ‘18.
The freshmen eight event only had 3 entries, two crews from Bucknell and a boat from Susquehanna. The two Bucknell crews finished within 15 seconds of each other, with Bucknell A winning the event just ahead of Bucknell B. Bucknell A was rowed by Andrew Back, John Robertshaw, Matt Gorloff, Matt Brown, Matt McLaughlin, Caleb Choi, Joon Shin, Andrew Ahn, and was coxed by Cami Berlin ’19. The B boat was rowed by Jack Gallagher, Matt LaRouche, Tom Lanphier, David Sullivan, Phil Thompson, Sam Jacob, Solomon Wise, Brandon Mills, and was coxed by Zack Schiffer.
Some of the freshmen then doubled up into the freshmen four event. Bucknell would go 1-2 in the event as well, with Bucknell A rowing to a 25 second victory over the Bucknell B. Bucknell A was rowed by Alex Herman, David Dayya, John Robertshaw, Matt LaRouche, and was coxed by Zack Schiffer. Bucknell B was rowed by Jack Gallagher, Andrew Back, Matt Gorloff, Tom Lanphier, and was coxed by Cami Berlin.
The varsity eights finished the racing for the day. Bucknell A finished 2nd, just 6 seconds behind LaSalle A. Bucknell B would finish in third, ahead of Binghamton A and LaSalle B, and Bucknell C would finish in 6th ahead of Scranton A and Binghamton B. Bucknell A was rowed by Sam Jubb ’17, Billy Pinamont ’17, Dillon LaFata ’18, Mike Pallotta ’18, Thomas Marth ’19, Andrew Stonnington ’19, Ryan Wang ’19, Nick Barpoulis ’17, and was coxed by Henry Leonardi ’18. The Bucknell Men will race next up in Boston at the 52nd Head of the Charles Regatta. The Bison have a collegiate eight entered that is racing on Sunday, October 23rd. The next full team event of the fall will be the Rutgers Fall Classic on November 6th.
